Medical Billing Degrees
Medical billing degree programs prepare students for careers as medical billers, who are responsible for submitting claims to insurance companies for the purpose of receiving payment for healthcare services.
Graduates often work throughout the healthcare system and are a key component in the management of both large and small healthcare organizations. Medical billers work in small primary care offices, urgent care clinics, small hospitals, regional healthcare centers, and university health systems. Medical billers are relied upon to provide accurate information and communicate within a fast paced environment. Because medical billers work with insurance companies that are increasingly becoming a standard presence in the provision of healthcare, the job potential of medical billers remains quite positive. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average medical biller is paid an annual average salary of about $33,000.
Certificate and associate’s programs in medical billing feature courses on medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, health information law, database management, computer science health care ethics, computing, and insurance. Programs also feature discussion on basic healthcare IT and office administration. Prerequisites of these programs are minimal; however the student should have a high school diploma or equivalent, and possess word processing and typing skills.
